Quitting with Intention

9/21/2025

I’ve learned that quitting something rarely works if you just… quit.
It’s so much easier and honestly, so much more empowering when you quit with intention.

What I mean by that is if you’re giving something up, you’ve got to replace it with something else or at least have a mindful plan in place. Otherwise, you’ll almost always end up going back to the very thing you wanted to leave behind.

When I came home from surgery, I was prescribed meds for pain. I didn’t like how they made me feel, the side effects, the fogginess. the hallucinations and I worried about addiction, given both my family history and my own past tendencies. Within a week, I decided to stop. But here’s the truth, I couldn’t have stopped that quickly if I hadn’t already prepared a plan. I leaned on essential oils, natural supports, and tools that got me through the pain and discomfort. Without that replacement, I probably would have kept taking the meds just to cope.

It’s the same with breaking up with social media. If I hadn’t created Stream with Hart as my new home for expression and connection, I know I would’ve slipped right back into old patterns of posting on platforms that didn’t really feel good to me. And even with this shift, I still get the urge to scroll. That’s why I made myself a list of things to do when that craving hits so I have options other than falling into the doom-scroll trap.

This applies to so many areas of life. If you want to quit drinking, don’t just say, “I have to quit drinking”. Explore what you’ll replace it with. Try fun infused waters, invest in a reverse osmosis or hydrogen water system, play around with natural flavor combinations. That way, quitting isn’t about deprivation or weakness, it’s about choosing something that moves you closer to the life you want to live.

Quitting with intention shifts the whole experience. It turns “giving up” into gaining something better.

Breaking Up with Social Media

9/19/2025

Social media and I have had a complicated relationship. At times, I love it as a way to connect, share, laugh and grow. But more often than not, it’s left me drained, distracted, and disconnected from what matters most.

It reminds me of a toxic relationship: you know it’s bad for you, but you keep going back. Out of habit. Out of boredom. Out of the hope that this time, it might feel different. Do you relate?

But lately, it’s been harder and harder to ignore the red flags:

  • Bots and fake accounts instead of real people.

  • A feed full of accounts I never chose to follow.

  • An algorithm deciding what posts I see.

  • The constant pull into politics and arguments meant to cause divisiveness.

  • The exhaustion of posting to help others feel uplifted, only to worry about likes, comments, and shares — and leave feeling depleted.

Meanwhile, I’ve watched the positive impact of stepping away. My boyfriend hasn’t been on for months, and the difference is inspiring!! He’s lighter, and so are our conversations.

I’ve realized scrolling doesn’t solve boredom. It creates more of it. And when I escape into my feed, I return with less energy, not more.

So I’m breaking up with social media and I will be sharing on these posts how I am going about it and what is helping me stay away. Just as you would with any friend going through a break up or kicking a bad habit, please share advice, tips and ideas of what to turn to instead.

The Importance of Community

9/18/2025

There’s something powerful about sitting in a room with people who are willing to show up, be open, and grow together. For me, that space has been Coffee with Champions, a weekly gathering through the Troy Chamber that I’ve come to look forward to as one of the best parts of my week.

Each time we meet, there’s a laid-out topic around personal or professional growth but what makes it special isn’t just the subject. It’s the way the conversations unfold with honesty, humor, and zero agenda. We’re not there to sell to each other or check a box. We’re there to connect. To get to know one another in a way that feels organic, real, and human.

That kind of in-person connection is rare these days, and I’ve come to treasure it. It rings truer and goes deeper than any “like” or comment ever could. And in my own life, it’s made all the difference. Members of this group have not only cheered me on in building the Collective, but they also surrounded me with personal support through my recent surgery and recovery. To be seen, cared for, and encouraged like that is something social media can’t replicate.

That’s why I believe so strongly in finding your own version of community. It doesn’t have to look like mine, but I encourage you to seek out spaces where you can engage face-to-face, whether it’s weekly, monthly, or even just once in a while. Because when we gather in person to share, to laugh, to listen we’re reminded that we don’t have to do life alone and it doesn’t have to feel heavy.
