Breaking Up with Social Media

9/19/2025

Social media and I have had a complicated relationship. At times, I love it as a way to connect, share, laugh and grow. But more often than not, it’s left me drained, distracted, and disconnected from what matters most.

It reminds me of a toxic relationship: you know it’s bad for you, but you keep going back. Out of habit. Out of boredom. Out of the hope that this time, it might feel different. Do you relate?

But lately, it’s been harder and harder to ignore the red flags:

  • Bots and fake accounts instead of real people.

  • A feed full of accounts I never chose to follow.

  • An algorithm deciding what posts I see.

  • The constant pull into politics and arguments meant to cause divisiveness.

  • The exhaustion of posting to help others feel uplifted, only to worry about likes, comments, and shares — and leave feeling depleted.

Meanwhile, I’ve watched the positive impact of stepping away. My boyfriend hasn’t been on for months, and the difference is inspiring!! He’s lighter, and so are our conversations.

I’ve realized scrolling doesn’t solve boredom. It creates more of it. And when I escape into my feed, I return with less energy, not more.

So I’m breaking up with social media and I will be sharing on these posts how I am going about it and what is helping me stay away. Just as you would with any friend going through a break up or kicking a bad habit, please share advice, tips and ideas of what to turn to instead.

I am in the era of protecting my peace. Anyone else? Getting even more in touch with my body while healing from surgery helped me realize everything found in this video.

I was particularly taken with Seth’s perspective on social media beginning at the 17 minute mark.

The Importance of Community

9/18/2025

There’s something powerful about sitting in a room with people who are willing to show up, be open, and grow together. For me, that space has been Coffee with Champions, a weekly gathering through the Troy Chamber that I’ve come to look forward to as one of the best parts of my week.

Each time we meet, there’s a laid-out topic around personal or professional growth but what makes it special isn’t just the subject. It’s the way the conversations unfold with honesty, humor, and zero agenda. We’re not there to sell to each other or check a box. We’re there to connect. To get to know one another in a way that feels organic, real, and human.

That kind of in-person connection is rare these days, and I’ve come to treasure it. It rings truer and goes deeper than any “like” or comment ever could. And in my own life, it’s made all the difference. Members of this group have not only cheered me on in building the Collective, but they also surrounded me with personal support through my recent surgery and recovery. To be seen, cared for, and encouraged like that is something social media can’t replicate.

That’s why I believe so strongly in finding your own version of community. It doesn’t have to look like mine, but I encourage you to seek out spaces where you can engage face-to-face, whether it’s weekly, monthly, or even just once in a while. Because when we gather in person to share, to laugh, to listen we’re reminded that we don’t have to do life alone and it doesn’t have to feel heavy.
