Your Next Big Thing

It’s funny how two completely different things can come together at the same time to inspire you in one meaningful way.

My partner’s brother and his buddies are facing professional life milestone transitions and decided to create a podcast to document their journey, share what they are learning and experiencing, provide listeners with tips and let you in on their friendship so while listening you feel like one of the gang. They are all Gen X’ers exploring Your Next Big Thing. I have tuned into a few episodes and have found a lot of value in them so of course wanted to share with you!

And speaking of finding your next big thing, Barbara O’Neill is the epitome of it’s never too late to start something new in life. In the midst of attending her conference last week, I paused from taking in all of the health and wellness information and turned my focus to her career.

She was a stay at home mom for many years. While raising her kids people started asking her more and more questions about what she does to keep them all healthy, naturally. She started sharing her practices to small groups at church and eventually in her late 40’s began working at a health retreat doing the same. This lead to posting her videos online and by age 66 she was known as the world’s grandma. At age 73 she is still traveling the world speaking at conferences and helping people take a new approach to their health and wellness.

She is living proof that what comes naturally to you in your everyday life, may just be your next big thing.

Start small.

Be authentic.

Believe in yourself.

Take one day at a time.

And of course, follow your personal process along the way.

Maybe We Need to Ask Why More Often

A compass with a floral design in the center and the words 'Elle Heart' at the bottom. The outer ring reads 'Feel Em Powered Every Day.'

I recently attended a Holistic Revival with Barbara O’Neill, and while I came home with pages and pages of notes about the body, nutrition, sleep, water, movement and all the things that contribute to our health, the part that stuck with me most wasn’t really about health at all.

It was the word why.

One of the things Barbara does so well is explain why the body does what it does.

Instead of simply asking, How do I make this symptom go away? she encourages you to ask, Why is my body doing this in the first place?

And I couldn’t help but think about how applicable that is to almost everything in life.

Why am I reacting so strongly to this?

Why does this bother me so much?

Why do I keep doing something I say I don’t want to do?

Why can someone else seemingly handle this so easily when I struggle with it?

Why do I know what would probably help me, yet still have such a hard time actually doing it?

We are very quick to try to change what is happening before we understand why it is happening.

With our bodies.

With our behavior.

With our relationships.

With other people.

And maybe even with the things that inspire us.

We hear something that makes complete sense, get excited about doing things differently, and leave thinking, I’m going to start doing that.

Then real life happens.

What I’m realizing more and more is that information can inspire us, but understanding ourselves is what helps us know what to do with it.

Maybe that's why why matters so much.

When we understand what is behind something, we stop fighting quite so hard against what we see on the surface. We become curious. We can make choices based on understanding rather than frustration, fear or assumption.

And sometimes that understanding is what finally allows something to change.

I came home with 35 pages of notes from Barbara’s sessions and have organized them into a resource covering the concepts, philosophies and practical suggestions she shared.

If you're interested in receiving a copy of my notes, reach out and I'll be happy to share them with you.

Books of the Month

A compass with a floral design in the center and the words 'Elle Heart' at the bottom. The outer ring reads 'Feel Em Powered Every Day.'

Last week I was very blessed and I say blessed because I was gifted a ticket to a life changing event. I have been a follower and fan of Barbara O’Neill for years and when I heard she was coming to lil’ ol’ Miami County, Ohio I was beyond excited but struggled with getting myself a ticket to attend. When the opportunity fell in my lap I knew it was meant to be and I was meant to be there.

Not only did she come to speak, she spent her morning signing books and you better believe I was one of the first in line. Just her presence alone is inspiring, especially given she is traveling the world at 73 years old sharing her gifts and knowledge.

The question I have been asked the most is, “What was your biggest takeaway?” and since I can’t narrow it down to one idea, I will share the health laws she lives by and goes into great detail in her books as well. So if you don’t get a chance to attend one of her events, and unfortunately it’s hard to tell what videos online are authentic or are deepfakes, I highly encourage you to pick up Sustain Me and Self Heal by Design both found on her website.
